Synopsis

It all begins in the 1980s in Wattrelos, in northern France. Ghalia is an 18-year-old Algerian girl, the youngest of her sorority, whom her family cherishes. On that day, she will finally marry the man she loves, Riyad. Her dearest wish, to create a home with the one she adores, is about to be fulfilled. However, despite her ingenious nature, Ghalia is feared by her in-laws. And for a good reason—her enchanting beauty is not universally appreciated, and she is said to be the incarnation of the terrible ogress Teryel, a fearsome mythological character who devoured young men and terrorised generations of North Africans.
The plot thickens when, the day after the wedding night, Ghalia is shocked to discover that her husband is dead. Some claim that he was the victim of the evil eye, while others are convinced that he was poisoned. Stories of revenge, political plots and witchcraft are told—but the main suspicion is that Ghalia is behind the tragedy. Her dreams are shattered, and Ghalia, far from eased by these suspicions, gradually allows this ogress and her powers to enter her.

About the Director

Samia Dzaïr is a French-Algerian director who graduated from the KASK School of Arts. She began by studying animation cinema, where she specialised as a 2D animator. Then, she devoted herself to the transmission of knowledge by creating workshops of image education to teach the public the techniques of animation. She trained in fiction writing and went on to direct two short films, ‘Soufre’ (2021) and ‘Le Poids de la Terre en Grammes’ (2022), before developing her TV show ‘Blue Weddings’. Her universe is very plastic with subjects such as sensuality, myths, immigration, or family.
