Synopsis

Special Screening

Eight students from the Filipino community in Doha – all from different family backgrounds, all with personal struggles to overcome – are the subject of this unique ensemble story about acceptance and reconciliation.

A complex long take introduces us to the intertwined stories of a group of kids trying to bond in a country far away from home. There’s Derek, who has just moved to Qatar from the Philippines to reunite with his father, who has a surprising domestic development to report. Jacque and her little sister Jaira are grieving for the loss of their mother, while Alex lies to her family so she can hang out with her friends after school.
Meanwhile, Hannah, whose tendency to overachieve makes her rather intimidating, finds that her parents’ strict guidelines come into question when she is wooed by a classmate and suddenly realises there’s more to life than being a straight-A student.

Divided into four chapters plus an endearing epilogue, ‘A Shout from Within’ was shot in the Philippine School of Doha – and was written by students of the school, which serves to make the struggles of its characters resonate all the more.
