Sometimes an individual can successfully play a role that formal bodies themselves can barely undertake in enhancing an economy, culture and community.

That role was played by filmmaker Tarak Ben Ammar when he set up a foundation for film production in Tunisia. And I wouldn’t have realised the magnitude of the two cinema cities, founded by Ben Ammar in Belaarous and Hammamet, without an invitation from Nabeel Kila, LTC chairman, to experience first-hand the great achievements in those cities.

Besides the countless accessories and costumes that date back to multiple historical eras, the decoration and design skill of the builders is truly world-class work. I was lucky to have visited the Hammamet Cinema City when “Black Gold” was being shot. The film is directed by French filmmaker Jean-Jacques Annaud, and stars Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, Algerian-born French actor Tahar Rahim and Indian actress Freida Pinto.
