  • powerful documentary on inspirational women entrepreneurs, on March 26

Doha, Qatar; March 21, 2018: The Embassy of Canada to Qatar in partnership with Doha Film Institute Cinema (DFI Cinema) and the Qatari Businesswomen’s Association will screen Dream, Girl, (USA/2016) a powerful documentary that celebrates the stories of inspirational and ambitious female entrepreneurs. The screening will take place at 7pm on Monday, 26 March 2018 at the Museum of Islamic Art Auditorium and will be followed by a panel discussion with businesswomen and entrepreneurs from the community.

Directed by Erin Bagwell, Dream, Girl paints a complex picture of what it means to be a leader. The women speak openly about the struggles and triumphs that come with entrepreneurship from discrimination and self-care to what it means to start a family and a business at the same time. Each woman has an authentic story that is unique to her individual experience. Yet the stories are interconnected in ways that uplift audiences in business and life.

Fatma Al Remaihi, Chief Executive Officer of the Doha Film Institute, said: “Closely following the International Women’s Day celebration, we are delighted to bring a film that showcases the stories of successful women entrepreneurs who have pushed their boundaries. Their stories will resonate with every individual, men and women, young and old, as they talk about how they overcame real-world challenges to achieve success. In Qatar, where women are at the forefront of entrepreneurship, creative industries and in professional roles, this documentary will form a special connection with audiences. We are thankful to the Embassy of Canada in Qatar and the Qatari Businesswomen’s Association for their support to this initiative.”

Adrian Norfolk, Canada’s Ambassador to Qatar said: “As part of Canada’s support for International Women’s Day and in line with Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy, we are pleased to be working with the Doha Film Institute and the Qatari Businesswomen’s Association on this important initiative. It is my hope that this inspirational film, with deep Canadian connections, will empower the next generation of women leaders and entrepreneurs.”

Erin Bagwell is a filmmaker, graphic designer and feminist blogger who, in 2013, founded Feminist Wednesday, a feminist storytelling blog that serves as a platform to share empowering and inspiring stories about and among women. In 2014, she launched a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising over $100,000 to produce Dream, Girl, her first feature-length documentary.

Erin’s story has been featured in Forbes, TED, Vogue, and she was named one of Oprah’s ‘SuperSoul100’, a list featuring extraordinary individuals who live life intentionally, create great social impact, and bring inspiration to others.

Aisha Alfardan, Vice Chairwoman of Qatari Businesswomen Association commended the effort of the Embassy of Canada in addressing the International Women’s Day by bringing this documentary and organizing this special event in partnership with DFI. She said: “I encourage all women, especially the young generation of brilliant girls in Qatar, to attend this event as I am positive it will be inspiring and will help them realise their own dreams and full potential”

The screening is free and seating is available on first-come first-served basis.
