Synopsis:
Set in 1930s England, ‘Brief Encounter’ tells the poignant story of Laura Jesson, a respectable, middle-class housewife, and Dr. Alec Harvey, a married physician. The two strangers meet by chance at a railway station café when Alec helps Laura remove a piece of grit from her eye. What begins as a casual encounter quickly blossoms into a deep emotional connection. As Laura and Alec continue to meet weekly, their bond intensifies, leading them to confront their growing love for each other—despite both being committed to other people. Torn between desire and duty, the pair face the impossible choice between following their hearts or preserving the lives they’ve built. Told through Laura’s reflective narration, ‘Brief Encounter’ is a beautifully restrained meditation on love, longing, and the quiet heartbreak of missed possibilities. With its evocative use of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Lean’s sensitive direction, the film remains a timeless classic about the emotional depth of fleeting connections.
Following the film screening, Bader member Sultan Al-Emadi will moderate an engaging Q&A session.
