What's On Today - Nov 20

Nov 20, 2012

It’s Bollywood day at DTFF!

Things kick off with a press discussion, where DTFF 2012 juror and film director Ashutosh Gowariker and actor Anupam Kher will be on hand for a discussion about Bollywood films. Is it possible to bring Bollywood to a wider audience than the Indian diaspora? Is that something that the industry wants or needs to aim for? Should prove to be an intriguing discussion.

Later on in the day, DTFF presents the late Yash Chopra’s final film. With a career that spanned five decades and more than 45 films to his credit, Chopra defined the language of Hindi movies as we know them today. His achievements as both director and producer are staggering. Chopra was the undisputed leader of Hindi cinema and a leading voice in the booming Indian film industry. For the past 40 years, a new Yash Chopra film was always the most anticipated event of India’s film calendar. Sadly, Chopra passed away just weeks before the release of ‘Till I Breathe This Life’, his final directorial effort, which is screening this evening at 7:00 PM at the Al Rayyan Theatre. The film features superstars Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in a story by Aditya Chopra. It’s classic Bollywood at its lavish best and a fitting farewell to an overwhelmingly illustrious career.

At the end of the evening, Festival guests will be treated to a party with a Bollywood theme – be sure to check in tomorrow to see who was there and what they got up to. As well, don’t miss Aditya Chopra’s first directorial effort – a film that changed the face of Bollywood in the 90s. ‘The Brave Hearted Will Take the Bride’ plays on Wednesday, 21 November in a free screening at the Sony Open-Air Cinema on the esplanade at Katara – it’s a great companion piece for ‘Till I Breathe This Life’.
