  • In Conversation: Antonio Banderas

    Join us in conversation with the star of DTFF Opening Night Film, “Black Gold”. One of the most renowned actors working today, Banderas made his screen debut in 1982’s “Labyrinth of Passion” by legendary Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar. He continued working with Almodovar over the years, most recently in the highly acclaimed “The Skin I Live In”. He has starred in more than 30 films including “Desperado”, “Frida”, “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”, “Interview With a Vampire” and is known worldwide as the star of “The Mask of Zorro”. He is the voice of Puss in Boots in the “Shrek” series and the upcoming feature “Cat in Boots”.

  • Authentic Khaleeji Storytelling

    How can the ambitions and local talents be developed to build a sustainable creative industry? Last month, Emirati director Ali Mostafa – in between filming his next feature following his debut, “City of Life” – launched his five minute thriller webisodes “Classified” with MBC. The casting and pre-production was done in three weeks. The series concept was inspired by the success of Lebanon’s Emmy ® award winning “Shankaboot”, which is now expanding its Arabic series to the Gulf, in search of untold stories and undiscovered talents. In this panel, join Qatari filmmaker Ahmed Al Baker and guests, to discuss how it’s more than just local audiences who want to consume Gulf storylines, from online to the big screen.     Asif Kapadia is known for exploring extreme and timeless landscapes and characters on a spiritual journey. His first short “The Sheep Thief” (1997) won Second Prize in the Cinefoundation at the Cannes International Film Festival, and Grand Prix at the 1997 European Short Film Festival. His first feature film “The Warrior” (2001) won two BAFTA Film Awards. “Far North” (2007) his third feature film, premiered at the Venice Film Festival. And this year he has reinvigorated the documentary genre with “Senna” (2011), a masterful and touching glance into the life of Ayrton Senna, the formula one driver who tragically died in 1994.

    A discussion around “Black Gold”and the behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of the film shot in Tunisia and Qatar during the Arab Spring. The director, the producer and the cast will explore the practical and creative aspects of shooting the film and share their stories and the challenges they experienced during this truly international production. The creative team will discuss the process of capturing the spectacular Qatari desert landscapes on film for the very first time.
