Maisha Documentary Lab, in association with DFI

Start date:
Jan 14, 2013
Ability Level:
Open to all levels.

Registration Closed

The Maisha Documentary Lab is open to anyone living in Doha who has a genuine interest in becoming a documentary filmmaker. Applicants with some experience in documentary filmmaking are encouraged to apply; however, production experience is not an essential requirement.

This intensive documentary workshop will focus on exploring non-fiction narratives and developing technical production skills. Through screenings, discussions, one-on-one critiques and hands-on workshops, the course will introduce participants to both theoretical and practical applications of documentary filmmaking.

For those interested in Directing / Screenwriting: Please submit a 200-word treatment on documentary ideas in addition to your online application. The subject for the documentary should be articulated as a ‘Short Documentary Portrait.’ A Portrait may be defined liberally and can include anything from an exploration of a person or a place to an event. Applicants should keep in mind that ideas must be concise and practical to be completed within the 14-day time period of the workshop.

For those interested in Cinematography, Sound Recording and Editing only: Please send a résumé and/or links to previous work in addition to your application. Please email your treatment or résumé to us at gulffilmdevelopment@dohafilminstitute.com

Twelve participants will be chosen to take part in this workshop and will develop, produce, shoot and edit three documentary films ranging from five to ten minutes. The three teams will divide the responsibilities of director, cinematographer, sound person and editor. Participants should indicate their area of interest when applying.

The Maisha Lab was founded by Mira Nair, director of ‘Monsoon Wedding’, ‘The Namesake’ and ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’, DFI’s latest co-financing production and the opening night film at the 2012 Doha Tribeca Film Festival. Nair will attend the lab to conduct master classes and critique students’ work.

This workshop is open to participants 18 years of age and older. Applications close 1st January 2013. Successful applicants will be notified by 5th January 2013. Please submit your application now!
