Muna, a divorcee with a teenage son, is an enthusiastic and optimistic Palestinian woman. Her everyday life in the occupied territories, however, is an ordeal. But then one day, she has the chance to move to the United States — to become a stranger in a strange land.
She leaves with her son, Fadi, to join her sister's family in Illinois, where after the initial elation of reunion, must now find their place in this Amreeka (America) they have dreamed of. But in a country that has just recently gone to war in Iraq, the newcomers encounter both hospitality and hostility.
Amreeka, was the winner of both the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival and the Fipresci Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Writer-director, Cherien Dabis, joins Amanda Palmer and the FPS audience for a question and answer session about her fresh slant — injecting her beautifully etched ensemble cast with massive doses of humor and warmth — on a long-standing culture clash.
