A documentary about the late Miriam Makeba, the phenomenally talented and charismatic musical icon from South Africa. She travelled the world, spreading a message against racism and poverty, and raising a voice for equality and peace. “Mama Africa” is an homage to an extraordinary and impressive artist who, through more than 50 years of performing, embodies the voice and the hope of Africa.

After the first screening of the film "Mama Africa", Angelique Kidjo will be performing her dynamic and uplifting style of music that has establshed her as a Grammy® award-winning recording artist. Named Africa's premier diva by Time Magazine, she strives to transcend barriers and provides a voice for those in need. Her foundation Batonga, promotes education for girls in Africa. She reinforces these messages of empowerment by traveling the world and performing her music.
Somi's unique sound will open Kidjo's musical feast. Often compared to Miriam Makeba and Sarah Vaughan, Somi creates a smooth blend of sounds that incorporates the legacies of jazz and African cultural misic.
About the Director
Mika Kaurismäki’s debut feature “The Liar” was an overnight sensation, when it released in Finland in 1980, marking a new era in Finnish cinema and the beginning of work from the now renowned Kaurismäki brothers. His many award-winning and commercially successful films include “Rosso”, “The Amazon”, “Zombie and the Ghost Train”, “LA Without a Map” and
“The House of Branching Love”.
