Synopsis

In the aftermath of the Yugoslav Wars, which were characterised by religious hatred and feuding, the horrors that accompany genocide and ethnic cleansing, and the mass displacement of persons, tensions between communities remained high. When majority Muslim-Albanian Kosovo declared independence from Serbia, the isolated communities of the Orthodox ethnic Serbian population were protected by United Nations forces.

In one of these Serbian enclaves, young Nenad is the only remaining youngster. Every day, he is taken to school – where he is the lone student – by Italian UN forces in an armoured vehicle. Occasionally, he is accompanied by the local priest; his only other companions are his unpleasant father and his ailing, elderly grandfather. Longing for friendship, Nenad strikes up a tentative alliance with two local Albanian boys, whose pleasure at chucking rocks at the UN tank is trumped by the possibility of riding inside it.

This attempt to break the boundaries of the enclave, however, bring Nenad face-to-face with another, far more dangerous youth – Bashkim, who bears an extreme grudge against the Serbs because they killed his father. Serbia’s foreign-language Oscar entry last year, ‘Enclave’ is a hopeful vision of a world where young people can see beyond blinding hatred.
